EDUCATION SYSTEM
Based on the Bologna Process, the education system in Italy was reformed in 1999 to create a cohesive system of education throughout Europe. Since then, Italy has implemented a 3-cycle system consisting of the following:

First Cycle: Bachelor degrees (3 years) and single-cycle degrees

Second Cycle: Master degrees (2 years) and 1st level vocational masters

Third Cycle: Doctorate (5-6 years) specialization school and 2nd Level vocational masters.
In terms of types of institutions, there are two broad institutional categories that make up the higher education sector in Italy: the university institutions and non-university institutions which include Higher Education in the Arts and Music (Alta formazione Artistica e Musicale or AFAM).
FEE STRUCTURE
The cost of tuition will vary at each institution. However, you should expect to pay more if you choose to attend a private university. A bachelor’s course will, on average, cost €900 to €4,000 per year at a public institution. Fees at a private institution usually cost, on average, €6,000 to €20,000 per year. International students should expect higher course costs.
INTAKES
Basically there are two intakes for Study in Italy. First academic year generally starts in the month of September and October while it ends in January or in February. However, the second semester starts in February and lasts in July. The accurate starting and ending dates of semester is different in various universities. Each semester ends up in twenty weeks in which 14 weeks are of teaching period and 6 weeks are of exams period.
VISA REQUIREMENT
If you are a non-EU or EFTA student, you will need to apply for a residence permit once you have a visa. This needs to be done within 8 days of your arrival in the country. You can apply for this at the post office in your new city of residence. If you need any advice or information about this process, your institution will be able to assist. Non-EU students must have health insurance in order to apply for a residence permit. Your counselor will help you to collect required documents for submission.
